2007 acura mdx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, more powerful, more fuel-efficient, more luxurious. introductionthe acura mdx is all-new for 2007. It's larger then the previous model and has been improved in every area. That's saying something given that the first-generation mdx (2001-2006) had a unique combination of style, design, utility, and a rock-solid powertrain with both good power and good fuel economy that made it very popular among mid-size luxury suvs. It sold in record numbers right to the end and was the second-best-selling acura model (after the tl sports sedan). the all-new 2007 acura mdx is built on a proper truck platform, and is not an adaptation of the accord passenger car platform. It doesn't look larger than last year's mdx, but it is in fact several inches longer and wider. That makes it among the largest vehicles of its type. From its wild new grille to its elaborately stylish cat's-eye headlamps to its huge new taillamps, it's got a more muscular look compared to the original, especially in the areas around the tires. Sporty styling cues include the big, fat dual exhaust tips that look like they belong on a v8, and the hefty five-spoke alloy wheels. Even the acura badge in the grille has been changed, and is now twice as big as it once was. the seats are laid out in three rows of two, offering seating for up to seven people. The 10-way driver and 8-way front passenger power seats allow huge adjustment latitude for long-distance comfort. the new mdx is physically stronger than the previous model, with a more rigid structure that's much more resistant to twisting and bending, beneficial for ride and handling as well as tightness as the vehicle ages. powertrain improvements include a larger, more powerful v6 engine, combined with a five-speed manual-shift automatic transmission. The completely updated exterior appearance, which is sportier still than the original, will make it easy to spot the new one. Inside, there is a completely new approach to suv interior design, a more organic, unified presentation of instruments and controls, a more involving scheme for the driver that should be appreciated by moms and dads alike. we found the mdx quiet and quick, with nicely weighted steering. The active damper system that comes on the sport model makes driving the mdx more fun, with a flatter ride and less body roll in the corners. The driver can select between sport and comfort modes for sharper handling or a softer ride. The navigation system, satellite radio, ipod input jack and bluetooth phone synching make it easy and fun to go down the road. acura says the new mdx competes with the bmw x5, the volvo xc90, the lexus rx 330, the mercedes-benz ml350, as well as the cadillac escalade and gmc yukon denali. The front bucket seats each have two-stage air bags and active head restraints, two-stage driver and front passenger knee bolsters, front seat side air bags and three-row side-curtain air bags including rollover triggering. That's in addition to the mandated front airbags. Active safety features, designed to help the driver avoid accidents in the first place, include all-wheel-drive, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist for panic stops. walkaroundthe 2007 acura mdx exterior and interior were designed entirely in america, at honda's facilities in los angeles and ohio, with input from design centers in st. Moritz, switzerland, and milan, italy. It's supposed to look like a wally 118 motor yacht, but it still looks like an suv to us. the formerly tasty grille has been turned into a metal-filled hole that looks like a battering ram, and the entire side has been rearranged with a new side window arrangement that suggests more sportiness than the original, with converging sheetmetal lines built into the design. Both headlamps and taillamps are heavily sculpted, and there is not one ounce of plastic cladding or side trim, in the same design vein as the original. Very clean, but susceptible to parking lot slams and door dings. The wheel openings, especially the fronts, are very pronounced, for a more sporty stance. Overall, we'd give it an 8. 7 for exterior design, remembering that it's essentially a big cargo box on wheels. this second-generation mdx is more than two inches longer in length and wheelbase than the previous model, with a wider track and a lower stance. The mdx is now larger than its competitors. acura's first power tailgate system is available on the mdx with the entertainment package. It can be operated either from the remote key fob, from a button on the driver's door panel, or from a button located inside the tailgate. The location of the tailgate's motor is the d pillar, not the roof, which yields more headroom for the third-row occupants. The tailgate can also be operated manually. interiorthe acura mdx has a completely new interior decor for 2007. It's designed with driver-centric instrumentation and displays. The two-line readout display for the climate control and entertainment systems uses large segmented figures and is very easy to read and interpret. There is scant rear legroom in the third row for adults; the third row is strictly for kids. In spatial terms, the interior has 142. 2 cubic feet of passenger space. There's 15 cubic feet of cargo behind the third seat, 43 cubic feet with the third row seats folded into the floor, and 83. 5 cubic feet with all seats down. With the five-speed automatic, the mdx is rated to tow up to 5000 pounds. the 2007 acura mdx benefits from a completely new platform, suspension, and unit-construction body with a built-in frame and subframes front and rear. The mdx is really stout, some 15 percent stronger in torsional bending and seven percent stronger in lateral bending. This time out, it has 56 percent of its body in high-strength steel as opposed to the original mdx's 13-percent hsla steel content. It's longer and wider, with a 2. 5-inch longer wheelbase and similar gain in overall length. all that adds up to a quieter ride quality, with zero squeaks, creaks, groans or rattles. the 300-hp 3. 7-liter v6 engine is all-new for this application. Compared to the old 3. 5-liter, it has been treated to a hot-rod upgrade, with a bigger bore, bigger stroke, higher compression (11:1, necessitating the use of premium unleaded fuel), and a higher redline (maximum rpm). It makes 47 more horsepower and 25 additional pound-feet of torque compared to the old engine. Acura says it's the most powerful v6 engine in any suv sold in the u. It's quick, fast, and quiet, like every acura engine before it, only more so. one very significant development has come underneath the lithe lines of the mdx, and that's the active damper system in the sport package option. These are the fastest-acting shock absorbers in the world, used by cadillac, ferrari, corvette, and audi, and they make driving an suv much more sporty, with a flatter ride and less body roll in the corners. A console-mounted switch lets the driver select between sport and comfort modes with the shocks. With the additional power and torque available from the new engine, and the amazing capabilities of the acura super handling all-wheel-drive (sh-awd) system already on board, we wouldn't order an mdx without this new technology. we drove the mdx in the hill country of western pennsylvania and eastern west virginia, and found it to be a delightful traveling partner. The torque-sensing variable power rack-and-pinion steering provided the right amount of help in every situation from parking to very high speed interstate travel, with nice weight at the wheel and good center behavior. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod. it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior. as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle. the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort. all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips. supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. The 2008 sonata limited model comes standard with the super-deluxe stereo that was optional last year. And xm satellite radio comes standard on all 2008 models. Otherwise, sonata is not significantly changed since it was totally redesigned for 2006. lineupthe 2008 hyundai sonata comes in three trim levels. The v6 comes with a five-speed shiftronic automatic. sonata gls 17,670) is the base model. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate. the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably current camry and accord models. Sporty, california hot rod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped versions. the hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature design cues, but its designers are looking in the right places. interiorhyundai upgraded the standard cloth upholstery in the gls and se for 2008, but otherwise, sonata's interior remains unchanged. the overall look is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. a polished, hard-surfaced applique underlined with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, a trend in high-end midsize sedans. as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcds. three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver. The largest is the speedometer, nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column is a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version; one is an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat. Beyond that is a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself, easier and more elegant when starting or shutting off the car. all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Redundant controls for the audio (optional on gls, standard on se and limited) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the standard cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. Hyundai says the audio controls will be improved by the end of the 2008 model year. outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door, ahead of the wheel well. There's a roof-mounted, hinged assist handle inside every door. seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering for the style of driving to which the sonata aspires. The limited model's leather adds a touch of class without pretending to be luxurious. The height adjustment on the driver's seat, both manual and power, pivots on the seat's front mounts, which effectively moves the seat forward as it rises. This compels taller drivers to choose between rearward seat travel and forward sightline, not always a happy compromise. On the upside, this adds inches to rear-seat legroom behind the driver, one of the multitude of measures in which the sonata generally bests its competition. Sonata comes in second to the new honda accord in front and rear headroom, and to the toyota camry in rear-seat headroom, and by a mere one- to three-tenths of an inch. And of the second-tier competitors, the kia optima alone betters the new sonata and then only by three-tenths of an inch in front seat hip room. In short, the sonata is among the roomier cars in its class. rear seats are accommodating, with the bottom cushion in the center position only minimally higher than and nearly as well padded as the outboard positions. Both rear outboard seating positions have adjustable head restraints, as do the front seats. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod. it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior. as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle. the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort. all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips. supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road.
